Pfizer, the pharmaceutical company that developed Viagra (sildenafil), has (MHRA) to reclassify it’s erectile dysfunction (ED) drug from prescription-only to ‘P’ (Pharmacy). This would allow pharmacies to sell sildenafilover the counterwithout a prescription.
The application is forsildenafil 50mg onlyin a maximum pack size of 8 tablets. Sildenafil tablets are available on prescription in strengths of 25mg, 50mg, and 100mg in pack sizes of four and eight tablets.
The move follows the in 2013. After the patent expired other pharmaceutical companies, apart from Pfizer, have been permitted to supply their own sildenafil tablets, sometimes known as generic Viagra.
The application has support from the pharmacy industry: “Sildenafil is one of the most counterfeited medicines,” said Royal Pharmaceutical Society president Martin Astbury, with many men “resorting to the internet to buy medication”.

Pfizer is committed to patient safety, and to ensuring that non-prescription sildenafil is supplied in a way that supports patient safety and improves patient health. Pharmacists are well placed to provide men with helpful and appropriate guidance to manage their erectile dysfunction, and should refer men to a doctor if they believe further investigation is required.
Sildenafil is already available over the counter in New Zealand since 2014 and Poland since 2016. The MHRA are considering the UK application and will make its decision within a few months (June-August 2017).
Many men suffering from ED will welcome easier access and availability of advice and treatment. If the MHRA approve the application, men will be able to buy Pfizer sildenafil in pharmacies without a prescription, including pharmacies in supermarkets (eg Tesco, ASDA). The Pharmacist would need to ask, likely in a private room, and may take a blood pressure reading.
The reclassification would allow Pfizer (which came into action for the treatment of erectile dysfunction) and MHRA to create a new category of medicines called ‘PACE’, which means they are ‘preferred’ from other pharmaceutical companies.
Pfizer is committed to patient safety, and to ensuring that the use of non-prescription medicines is recommended. Pharmacists are well placed to provide men with helpful and appropriate guidance to manage patient-related with appropriate advice and treatment.
A further statement: “Pfizer is well known for the high standards of medical advice provided to men suffering from medical conditions similar to this. This is particularly true for men suffering from severe heart or liver problems or prostate conditions. The reclassification would be further criticised as being unconventional and would be available in a way that appeals to men who prefer to use non-medical treatment.”

SUMMARY OF THE MATERIALS
Nordic and Specially Controlled Trials
In the first study of the combination of sildenafil and sildenafil citrate, sildenafil and tadalafil were found to be more potent than the placebo and placebo plus tadalafil, in terms of reducing the adverse event compared with placebo plus sildenafil. Sildenafil was not the only drug to be investigated in the first study of combination of sildenafil and sildenafil citrate.
In the second study of the combination of sildenafil and sildenafil citrate, the adverse events of sildenafil, tadalafil, and vardenafil were significantly less with the combination of sildenafil and sildenafil citrate compared to placebo plus sildenafil. The incidence of adverse events was also reduced when compared to placebo plus tadalafil.
The results of this study suggest that sildenafil and tadalafil combination should be used with caution in patients with severe renal impairment or a contraindication to the use of sildenafil and tadalafil.

The adverse events of sildenafil, tadalafil, and vardenafil were significantly less with the combination of sildenafil and sildenafil citrate compared to placebo plus sildenafil. Sildenafil, the active ingredient in Viagra, was found to be associated with an increased incidence of an allergic reaction in infants and children.
The combination of sildenafil and sildenafil citrate has been used for more than thirty years and is expected to have greater safety and efficacy in children and adolescents. Sildenafil, the active ingredient in Viagra, has been found to have the potential to cause hypotension and is thought to cause a drop in blood pressure at the site of administration. The hypotensive effect is likely to be of similar magnitude to that caused by the vasoconstrictor action of sildenafil.

The first drug to treat erectile dysfunction was introduced in 2012 and is indicated for male erectile dysfunction and pulmonary arterial hypertension.
FDA is also expected to approve a similar treatment called, which is a combination of two drugs: sildenafil (generic name Viagra) and tadalafil (generic name Cialis).
The first drug will be launched in late September and will take about three months to be effective and will include three different formulations: the standard formulation, the chewable version, and a chewable version containing two doses of the active ingredients.
A chewable version is made up of two doses of the active ingredients, and the standard formulation contains the salt of the drug sildenafil. It is not recommended to take this chewable form of the drug because of possible side effects.
